Antrim LGFA’s own Fionnuala Murphy and Cathy Carey joined BBC NI’s Lynette Fay at a Féile an Phobail event on Monday evening (7 August) to discuss the 70th Anniversary of Casement Park.

Fionnuala is an amateur historian and is writing a book on the social history of the Andersonstown Road ground, looking at not just the games, but the memories of the people who worked or volunteered at the ground, the players, fans, coaches and anyone with a notable memory of the pitch.

She discussed the fundraising and purchase of the ground. The early games played at the stadium and it’s occupation by the British Army in the early 1970s. Fionnuala, who is Vice-Chair of the county executive and referee co-ordinator, is keen to hear from anyone with a story about Casement or any rare photographs or artefacts.

Looking forward, Antrim captain Cathy Carey was joined by GAA Uachtarán Tofa Jarlath Burns and recently retired Antrim hurler Neil McManus and talked about their own personal memories of playing on the Casement Park pitch but also revealed their hopes for what the new ground will bring to Gaelic games, not only in Antrim but in Ulster and beyond.
