Match Report Ulster U16 Group1 –R2
9th March 2022
Monaghan V Antrim Saturday 5th Mar 2022
The U16s got off to a winning start against Donegal last week in their postponed game with a four-point win, and Saturday last in windy Cloghan they continued their winning ways with an impressive victory over Antrim.
Monaghan opened the scoring through captain Dervla Cawley as she scored two in a row. Antrim put over two of their own through frees from Casey Meighan. A lot of good football was played by both sides, but Monaghan looked to be always in control and were more ambitious in attack. The first major for Monaghan came midway through the half with once again Dervla Cawley been the provider, from the waterbreak to the end of the first half it was quite a cagey affair as both side defended well and left little room for scoring, that said Monaghan put over another two from Ella Mc Meel and Ferne Duffy while Antrm recorded the first from play with Lisa Wilson pointing. The second half seen Hannah Donaghy pointing for Antrim within minutes as they tried to break down Monaghans hold on the game, but it wasn’t long before Monaghan had their second goal as Allison Gillland ht the net, back came Antrm with one of their own through Orleigha Mc Guinness and followed up with a point from Nicole Munroe, Monaghan continued to push ahead with another pont from Ella Mc Meel to keep the scoreboard in their favour.
The second waterbreak was over when Monaghan struck for the third goal as Dervla Cawley again showed her class. Antrim were guilty of some poor shooting that didn’t help their cause until Nicole Munroe.
Another major came for Monaghan as the Antrim keeper having the ball in her possession close to walk outwards into the path of the incoming Aine Maguire and gifted her pass to bury to the empty net. Cliodhna Lagan did put over another for her team as Monaghan came back with two in arrow from Ella Mc Meel and Caoimhe Kelly, there was time left for another two majors as both sides shared one a piece first from Antrims Cliodhna Lagan, and after from Aisling O’Sullivan of Monaghan. Monaghan were full value for their win, with a gutsy performance throughout and should they keep this up, it could well be an ulster final spot for the second year running
